ART TO DISTRACT YOU
2.
If you've enjoyed the derivative art made by people imitating those who'd come before them who had vision, you're going to enjoy the derivative art made by machines imitating those people.
But for the rest of us, those of us who don't turn to art to distract us from boring or uncomfortable or sad feelings, but who seek it out to help us redeem that boredom and discomfort and sadness as something essential to humanity, we're going to need something else.
We're not going to get it from machines, just like we didn't get it from those derivative people.
We're going to get it from each other.
The MO of art for distraction's sake is similar to many other industries: to profit off symptom management. Take this for your boredom. Take this for your sadness. But you'll have to keep taking more and more, because boredom and sadness are symptoms, and they're only going to grow more resistant, and require more and more numbing, until you address the cause, which is: what are you doing with your soul?
Your soul only cares about what you achieve when those achievements feed it. It doesn't care about how good of a person you are, it cares about how real you are.
And it definitely doesn't care about being distracted, so you can keep achieving things, so you can keep being a good person, all according to standards from everywhere else.
Art for distraction's sake makes you think you're seeing the next new thing, but you're really just upping your dose, and your tolerance, of the same old drug. Getting more and more dependent, and becoming more fragile.
The MO of real art is to understand what's really going on, so you can realize how strong you are and start really living this incredible life.
Your soul never gets damaged. It just gets hidden under distractions.
Art for distraction's sake is the country song that pretends to promote family values but just models entitlement, conformity, and unexamined cowardice. It's the netflix show designed "to be binged" while you half-listen to it in a hidden tab while grinding through your day job. It's anything that tells you the same thing over and over again that doesn't hold up well to any further examination on a solitary walk in nature. It can come in any genre or medium, but it always follows trends.
